Questions we’ve been answering since 2004
Some of these are as old as Gotham Dream Cars™ itself. The answers are today’s policy, in plain English, grouped so you can jump straight to the part that worries you. The complete text is on the requirements page; anything else, call (212) 957-4400, at any hour.
Who gets the keys
Age, extra drivers, records, licences from abroad.
How old do I have to be to rent?
Twenty-one, holding a valid licence, with a clean record: no major moving violations, no DUI. That’s the floor. Some cars set a higher minimum, and when one does it applies to every driver on the agreement; we tell you when you book. Under 21 the answer is no, on every car in the fleet.
I want to rent for my prom. I’m under 21, but my uncle/father/mother/sister/cat is going to rent it for me. I promise I won’t be driving the Ferrari. Is that OK?
Yes, provided the person renting is 21 or older, signs the agreement and does all of the driving, every leg of the night. Nobody under 21 takes the wheel, not even for a photo. If no adult wants to drive, add a chauffeur instead: offered on many of the cars at additional cost, quoted for each booking.
Can I add a second driver?
Yes, and it costs nothing extra, provided they’re written into the agreement. Each extra driver clears the same age, licence and record rules you do, sends us their licence beforehand and turns up in person for the handover. Someone who isn’t on the paperwork isn’t covered to drive the car, and that one doesn’t bend.
Will you check my driving record?
We may. Before a rental starts we can pull an MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) on any renter to confirm the licence is valid. You don’t pay for it separately; it’s part of the flat $95 fuel fee.
I live outside the U.S. Can I rent?
Yes. Bring your passport and a valid licence issued where you live. Without insurance that covers you here, two things change: we can set up coverage for you if the rental lasts at least two days, and the security deposit is higher, by an amount that depends on the car.
Insurance & the deposit
What covers the car, and what we hold until it’s back.
I only drive a Toyota Camry. Will my insurance really cover a Ferrari?
Yes, if the policy carries the right coverage. What sits in your driveway doesn’t matter: a policy in good standing covers damage to our cars too, so the Camry is irrelevant. Renting as a New York customer? Liability alone is enough. From any other state you need full coverage (liability, comprehensive and collision). We confirm with your insurer before the car leaves. American Express cardholders have one more option: Amex Premium Car Rental Protection covers rentals with us, on top of your own policy. No personal policy at all? Call, and we’ll go through the third-party damage-waiver products with you.
What’s the security deposit for, and how much is it?
It’s what any damage found at return is billed against. Most rentals carry $2,500; some carry more, an international renter without U.S. coverage being the usual case. On a credit card it’s an authorization, not a charge, and it lifts after we’ve inspected the returned car. Two exceptions, because a hold can’t run that long or doesn’t work that way: on a rental of a week or longer, and on any debit or prepaid card, the deposit is charged and then refunded within five business days after return. Cash or a cashier’s check can also serve as the deposit, if arranged in advance.
My insurance covers the car, so why does the damage bill come to me?
Because the agreement is between you and us, not us and your insurance company. If the car comes back damaged, we bill you, starting with the deposit, and you claim it from your carrier as you would any other accident. You get an itemized repair estimate with photos and five business days to inspect the car and the numbers; anything you dispute in writing in that time isn’t charged until it’s resolved.
Days, miles & boundaries
How long, how far, and the few things the cars aren’t for.
Can I rent by the hour?
No. The shortest rental is a full day: 24 hours from handover, timed around your plans.
Fine. What about a single day at the weekend?
Sunday on its own, yes, if the car is free. A rental that starts on a Friday or a Saturday carries a two-day minimum. If a single Friday or Saturday is all you need, call; the desk has the calendar in front of it and will tell you straight whether it works.
Is there a mileage limit?
Yes: a hundred miles a day on daily and weekend rentals, 700 on a weekly, unless the car’s page says otherwise. Past the allowance, each extra mile is billed at the rate on that car’s page. Drive more than double the allowance and a further $3 a mile is added for wear and tear.
When does the car have to come back?
At the time agreed when you booked. A rental day runs 24 hours from handover, so a car delivered at ten comes back at ten. There’s an hour’s grace; after that, additional daily rental fees can apply. Please keep to the time you booked: our drivers’ day is scheduled around it.
Where am I allowed to take it?
Anywhere in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. Beyond those, you need our written approval before you go.
Is there anything I can’t do with the car?
A short list, and we mean every line. No racing, rallies, speed tests or contests, and no driving on or near a track or road course: no insurer covers a car there, which would leave you and us sharing a very large bill. No towing or pushing anything. No carrying passengers or goods for hire, no driving lessons, no unpaved roads, no exceeding the speed limit, nothing illegal, and nobody at the wheel who is unlicensed, suspended or restricted. Break one and the rental ends; we come and collect the car.
Delivery & pick-up
Getting the car to you, and when.
Can you bring the car to me?
Yes: to your home, your office, a hotel, an airport, wherever you’ll be. Or pick it up from us at 475 Alfred Ave, Teaneck, NJ 07666 and leave your own car in our building at no charge until you’re back. Delivery is never included in a rental price; it’s priced from the exact address and quoted when you book, while pick-up and return in Teaneck cost nothing. Lock in the details a day or more ahead; a change on shorter notice can carry an extra transport fee.
Could you deliver at 8 in the morning? What about 11 at night?
Both can happen. Regular handover hours are 8am to 9pm, every day, so a breakfast-time delivery is routine. Late at night takes a phone call to (212) 957-4400 (answered at any hour) and costs an after-hours fee on top.
Why a two-hour window instead of an exact time?
Traffic around New York is hard to predict, so we book a two-hour window rather than a minute. Plan on the early end of it: that’s when our driver aims to be at your door.
When are you open?
The office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, and weekends 10am to 4pm by appointment. Pick-ups in Teaneck are by appointment, any day of the week. The phone doesn’t keep office hours: someone answers at any time, on any day.
Paying for it
Cards, tax, fuel, tolls and tickets.
How do I pay?
By card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover), with the full amount taken at booking. Cash or a cashier’s check can work if it’s arranged in advance. No personal or business checks.
What will I pay in tax?
That depends on where the car is delivered. New Jersey’s rate is about 7%. New York City’s rental taxes add up to nearly 20%. Your quote itemizes the tax before you pay.
Does paying in cash get me out of the sales tax?
No. Tax follows the rental, not the payment method; cash changes how you pay, not what you owe.
What do fuel and tolls cost?
Fuel: the car arrives full and can come back at any level, for a flat $95 fuel fee per rental, whatever its length, which also pays for the MVR check. If you do fill up, Premium only (93 octane or higher); a lower grade costs $350. Tolls: the cars carry no E-ZPass, so tolls are billed by licence plate and charged back to you, plus a $15 toll fee on every rental, even if you bring your own tag, in case it misses one.
What happens if I get a ticket?
It’s yours. Parking, speeding and every other ticket or violation from your rental period goes to the renter, along with any towing or impound costs. We track them and charge them back, and if we pay one on your behalf, a $50 administrative charge applies.
Can I combine discounts?
Not unless an offer says it combines. One discount per rental; take the bigger one.
When plans change
Cancelling, weather, refunds. Read this one before you book.
What happens if I cancel?
Booking takes the full rental amount up front. For the first 24 hours afterwards you can change or cancel at no cost, unless the start date is less than a week away. From then on, a cancellation costs half the rental, with a $500 minimum. Inside a week of the start, a reschedule, cancellation or no-show costs the full amount. Dream Car Tour™ spots work differently: non-refundable from the moment you book, but you can hand yours to another driver.
My {insert relative here} just died. Can I cancel? Please, have a heart.
We’re sorry for your loss. The policy above still has no exceptions, and it can’t: after more than twenty years in this business we’ve heard every emergency there is, and we aren’t in a position to judge which ones are real. What still works: the 24-hour window if you’re inside it, and a tour spot can always go to a friend instead.
What if the weather turns?
We don’t refund or reschedule for rain or a changed forecast. Dangerous conditions are different. If snow, ice or a hurricane makes the roads truly unsafe and you leave the car in the garage, we may add a day to the rental or give you credit toward another one; that call is ours.
Do you give refunds?
Not on rentals, and not on gift certificates. Where the weather rule applies, we may offer extra days as credit, at our discretion. And if a car fails mechanically before or during your rental, we repair it or swap in a similar or better car, at no cost to you.
The Dream Car Tour
A morning, six cars, and you’re the one driving.
What is a Dream Car Tour spot?
Your place on the tour, for you at the wheel and one guest beside you. The tour is a morning of about three hours, six cars, roughly thirty minutes behind the wheel of each, on dates we set. A spot is $1,195 plus tax. See the dates
What does the tour ask of its drivers?
Everything a rental asks for: you’re 21 or over, licensed, with a clean record and auto insurance of your own. We also hold $1,500 per driver on a card as a security deposit, and let it go once the tour is done.
Can I give the tour as a gift?
Yes. A gift certificate covers one spot and arrives by email or post; the recipient picks a date when they’re ready. Like the tour itself, it’s non-refundable.
We’re a group. Can we have a date of our own?
Four or more drivers can book a private tour on a date of their own, priced per group. Private tours
